Frédéric Fekkai Salon

394 West Broadway 2nd Floor
Soho

712 Fifth Ave. 4th Floor
5th Ave.
212.753.9500
Frederic Fekkai has two NYC salons, a sophisticated set-up in SoHo and a classy Fifth Avenue outlet. Both are the epitome of contemporary, modern salons, where the emphasis is on space, light, and relaxation. There are sofas to chill out on while you await your appointment, and customers get to sit at their own hair station, with plenty of space around them to spread out. As with all FF stores, the focus is on individual styles to suit you as a person, there is no signature cut. This way, you're not going to look like anyone else when you leave here, just yourself. The products they use are the height of luxury, with their Classic Fekkai range of shampoos, conditioners and volumizers, being my special favorites.

Garren New York Salon
www.garrennewyork.com
781 5th Ave.
Midtown
212.841.9400
Located in the atrium of the ultra-modern Sherry-Netherland Hotel on Fifth Avenue, Garren is where you come if you want to be seen. It's 2000sq ft of glass, chrome, and general whiteness, a real work of art. But don't feel intimidated, because the staff are super-friendly and, most importantly, uber-talented. Seeing how much care and expense they've taken with the interior, is a reassuring thing - they know their hair care has to measure up to their own bar. This is where NYC's magazine editors, photographers, designers and socialites hang out, so you'll be in good company. Definitely one for that special occasion haircut.

ION Studio

41 Wooster St # 1R
Soho
212.343.9060
This very hip SoHo salon is for those who love high fashion and runway hair. It's owned by three very respected, urban stylists, who are always being featured in major ad campaigns, fashion shows, and glossy editorials. Their salon is sustainable and uses eco friendly shampoos, conditioners and other products. Even the furniture is kind to the planet. All the stylists are incredibly friendly and will take the time to talk through a consultation. If you're a regular client, you get free bang trims, plus free color consultations, so it's worth coming here at least once, for all the free add-ons you get later.

John Barrett Salon
www.johnbarrett.com
754 Fifth Ave., 9th Floor
Midtown
212.872.2700
This very swish salon is located in the penthouse suite at Bergdorf Goodman. JB is a legend on the New York fashion scene, so you'll have to book early to get an appointment here. They are particularly good at coloring and Japanese straightening. If you're one of those girls who has frizzy locks that drive you crazy, they do an amazing service here, tempering your locks so that not even the rain will frizz them out (lasts 5-6 days and is incredible...). If you've got money to burn, or just want to spoil yourself, then you can't get more indulgent than booking in just to have your ponytail styled properly. Yes, A-listers come here to have a professional stylist shampoo, blow dry and 'arrange' their ponytail, so it's "just so" for walking around the streets of Manhattan. Very Gossip Girl.

Rita Hazan Salon
www.ritahazansalon.com
720 5th Ave.
Midtown
212.586.4343
This is a lovely, feminine hair salon, and I always come here when I need to feel girly. Everyone's really friendly, and most of the stylists will have a quick chat as you sit in the waiting area for your appointment. The salon floor is laid back, albeit quite small, and quite retro in style - white and chrome chairs, angular mirrored alcoves, big spotlights, and a semi-circular, red-padded lounge where you can sit under the dryer while your highlights/treatment get warmed up. There's also a full make-up bar, and a mini-treatment room for facials and massages etc, and it's certainly one of the best salons to come for a couple of hours chilling-out. Specialties include color, highlights and layered haircuts.

Ted Gibson Salon
www.tedgibsonsalon.com
184 5th Ave
Flatiron
212.633.6333
This is a minimalist salon on Fifth Avenue that concentrates on providing an escape from city life for Manhattan's elite. The simple, monochrome decor and beautiful wooden floors avoid pretension, so you (and your stylist) can just focus on getting the best hair care without any fuss. The salon's on the second floor, so if you're lucky enough to get a window seat, you'll have a fantastic of Fifth Avenue below you. Because the salon is quite masculine in tone, it's a great place for single girls to come and flirt with the very hot guys who frequent here. Two products in one - a great hair cut, and lots to look at while you're here.

Whittemore House
www.whittemorehousesalon.com
45 Grove Street
West Village
212.242.8880
Deliberately marketed as an alternative to NYC's glitzy, high end chrome and mirror salons, this boutique hair salon in the West Village is a favorite with bohemians, writers, artists and those who just want grass roots, no-nonsense hair care. Founded by two ex- Bumble & Bumble stars, the salon's housed in a gorgeous, 19th century building, and the vibe is very much a mix of Victorian nostalgia and modern chicness. The contemporary salon chairs, mirrors and equipment, contrast well with French-inspired armchairs, mahogany doors, alabaster fireplaces and intricate, 'fireside' wall coverings. You'll definitely come here for the ambiance as much as the quality of their stylists.

Eva Scrivo Salon
www.evascrivosalon.com
632 Hudson St.
Manhatten
212.677.7315
One of NYC's most user-friendly salons, going to Eva Scrivo is like having your hair cut at your best friend's house - very laid back and chatty. It's a very pretty salon, with lots of fresh flowers, beautiful chandeliers, warm tones and lovely interior art and architecture. The staff are so approachable, as well, and every one of them is personally trained by Eva herself, to perfect Eva's signature "UnCut" technique. If you like to experiment with your hair, or don't mind plumping for something a bit different, then Eva's "UnCut" is for you. The technique uses both scissors and razor, to give you that nice 'growing out' look, instead of an obvious fresh cut. It's more natural, and it's very in demand right now. So if you want to stay ahead of the game, book in with these guys.

Julien Farel Salon
www.julienfarel.com
605 Madison Avenue
Manhatten
212.888.8988
The name Julien Farel is synonymous with the New York look, so it's no surprise he has two salons, one on Fifth Avenue, and this one on Madison. It's very contemporary, with lots of wood block decor, huge mirrors, barber-style chairs and plenty of fresh flowers, but it's small enough to feel personal and un-salon-y. Every fixture and fitting is arranged according to the principles of Feng Shui, so you will feel instantly at ease the moment you walk in here. There's a VIP room, for ultra-personal service, as well as treatment rooms for pedicures, manicures and make-up. If you're busy and time is precious, they also specialize in one-hour appointments, whether it's a hair cut, make-up or treatment. Want to push the boat out? Julien Farel can send one or more of his stylists to your own home, office, or even hotel room.
