Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel was a fiercely independent woman who started as a milliner and ended up growing one of the biggest fashion empires in the world. She changed the way we look at fashion and the way women dress forever.

Coco Chanel had an interesting love life. She once stated that her nickname Coco came from the word cocotte which means "kept woman." Indeed Chanel had many lovers; each one seemed to be wealthier than the last. Her lovers provided her with places to live and introduced her to lavish lifestyles. So perhaps she was at times, a "kept woman."

Oprah Winfrey

If there is one woman who has shown us that not every woman needs the piece of paper to be happy and have a good relationship and life partner, it is Oprah Winfrey. I don't think there is any other public woman who seems as comfortable in her own skin and with her life choices.

It wasn't always easy for Winfrey. She had her share of failed relationships and heartbreak. Men who were Winfrey's previous lovers included John Tesh and Roger Ebert. But in 1986 is all came together for her when she started seeing Stedman Graham.

Natalie Clifford Barney

American born, but Paris naughty girl at heart, Natalie Clifford Barney was an extraordinary woman and sexual thinker. A poet who reported knowing she was a lesbian at the age of 12, she lived on her on terms in Paris declaring, "My queerness is not a vice, is not deliberate and harms no one." She started publishing poems about lesbianism as early as 1900 and in a strong act of courage considering the times, she published under her own name. She said the scandal of living as an out lesbian helped her get rid of nuisances, meaning unwanted sexual advances from men.

Cleopatra

Everyone knows who Cleopatra is along with her story, as she is one of the most famous female rulers in history. The reason that I'm writing about her for my single, independent women is that she was a single and independent woman of her time. Yes, she was married three times but two of her marriages were arranged marriages to her brothers. The last one was to Mark Anthony who she loved.

Aphra Behn

An international spy, first professional woman writer along with paving the way for women's sexual freedom, Behn was way ahead of her time. She wrote about things that were considered daring especially for a woman writer in a male-centered society. She wrote about problems woman faced in sexual relationships in her well-known poem, "The Golden Age." She wrote about a world where women were allowed to express their sexual desires without reprimand, which did not exist in Behn`s time. Also, a world where women no longer submitted to men but to their own desires.

Simone de Beauvoir

When I think of a great relationship, I think of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. This is not your typical relationship where they were married, had kids and lived happily ever after; instead, it was a realistic relationship. Their relationship was not perfect but to them it was close enough. They never lived together, married or had children but Beauvoir claimed that their relationship had been her biggest achievement.
